Brainstorming – part 1

Back to Carroll´s books… I´ve just decided to concentrate my visual metaphors or inspiration in two topics: food (eat+drink) and identity. Both of them I have as challenge to myself to translate them in a visual work. Photographic working dealing specially with mass media+uses of photography and implications in our life. How I develop this? well, I´m still working on it. Brainstorming… My great challenge is to make a consistent visual(photographic)work but present it in an interesting way… Creative process: very chaotic…. reading, re-reading, doing it again and over and over…Going to Art Galleries, talking to creative people, observing, photographing…. First feasible ideas are just popping-up in my head..but only when it is all ready I can make it public, of course!

Going down the Rabbit-Hole….Seeing through the Looking Glass….Moving on!

Alice’s Evidence

” `No, no!´, said the Queen. `Sentence first – veredict afterwards.´

`Stuff and nonsense´, said Alice loudly. `The idea of having the sentence first.´”

“`Wake up, Alice dear!´said her sister; `Why, what a long sleep you’ve had.´”

“(…) and thinking of little Alice and all her wonderful Adventures, till she too began dreaming after a fashion (…)”

“So she sat on, with closed eyes, and half believed herself in Wonderland, though she knew she had but to open them again, and all would change to dull reality (…)”

The Mock Turtle’s Story

” `When I’m a Duchess´, she said to herself, (not in a very hopeful tone though), `I won’t have any pepper in my kitchen at all. Soup does very well without – maybe it’s always pepper that makes people hot tempered´, she went on, very much pleased at having found out a new kind of rule, `and vinegar that makes them sour – and camomile that makes them bitter – and – barley-sugar and such things that make children sweet-tempered. I only wish people knew that: then they wouldn’t be so stingy about it, you know – ´”

“`Everything’s got a moral, if only you can find it´”

“Alice did not much like keeping so close to her: first, because the Duchess was very ugly (…) “

“And the moral of that is – `The more there is of mine, the less there is of yours.´”

“`Thinking again?´, the Duchess asked, with another dig of her sharp little chin.

`I’ve a right to think´, said Alice sharply, for she was beginning to feel a little worried.

`Just about as much right´, said the Duchess, `as pigs have to fly; and the m –´”

“`How do you like the Queen? said the Cat in a low voice.

`Not at all´, said Alice: `she’s so extremely –´”

A Mad Tea-party

- a table set under a tree in front of the house

- March Hare

- the Hatter

- Dormouse

“The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded together at one corner of it: `no room! no room!´they cried out when they saw Alice coming. `There’s plenty of room!´said Alice indignantly, and she sat down in a large armchair at one end of the table.”

- time

” `Suppose we change the subject´, the March Hare interrupted, yawning. `I’m getting tired of this. I vote the young lady tells us a story.´”

“`Take some more tea´, the March Hare said to Alice, very earnestly.

`I’ve had nothing yet´, Alice replied in an offended tone, `so I can’t take more´.

`You mean you can’t take less´, said the Hatter: `it’s very easy to take more than nothing.´”

- tree with a door

“Once more she founded herself in the long hall, and close to the little glass table(…) and then she founded herself at last in the beautiful garden, among the bright flower-beds and the cool fountains.”

Pig and Pepper

- invitation

- the Duchess

- a baby

- soup

- too much pepper

- cheshire cat

” `You don’t know much´, said the Duchess `and that’s a fact.´”

” `If everybody minded their own business,´the Duchess said in a hoarse growl, `the world would go round a deal faster than it does.´”

” `Which would not be an advantage´, said Alice, who felt very glad to get an opportunity of showing off a little of her knowledge. `Just think of what work it would make with the day and night! You see the earth takes twenty-four hours to turn round on its axis – ´

`Talking of axes,´said the Duchess, `chop off her head!´ “

” `Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?´

`That depends a good deal on where you want to get to´, said the Cat.

`I don´t much care where´ said Alice.

`Then it doesn’t matter which way you go´said the Cat

`– so long as I get somewhere,´Alice added as an explanation. ”

Advise from a Caterpillar

One of my favorites dialogues can be found here…

” `Who are you?´said the Caterpillar. (…)

`I can’t explain myself, I’m afraid, sir´, said Alice, `because I’m not myself, you see.´”

“`What size do you want to be?´it asked.”

“One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter.´”

” `Well, what are you?´said the Pigeon. `I can see you´re trying to invent something´”

The Rabbit send in a Little Bill

(back to my extracts from Alice in Wonderland)

- a pair of gloves and a fan

- little bottle that stood near the looking-glass

” `I know something interesting is sure to happen´, she said to herself, `whenever I eat or drink anything; so I’ll just see what this bottle does.(…)´”

“But then´, thought Alice, `shall I never get any older than I am now? that’ll be a comfort, one way – never to be an old woman – but then – always to have lessons to learn! oh, I shouldn’t like that!´”

” `If I eat one of these cakes´, she thought, `it’s sure to make some change in my size (…)´”

- cakes

” `The first thing I’ve got to do´, said Alice to herself, as she wandered about in the wood, `is to grow to my right size again; and the second thing is to find my way into that lovely garden. I think that will be the best plan.´”

- large mushroom

- large blue caterpillar

- long hookah
